What a postpartum doula does

Traditionally, women were cared for by their families and friends during the postpartum period. In our modern society a mother’s support network may not be available. Our doulas provide the care and support that was customary in cultures throughout history. A postpartum doula’s duties change from day to day, as the needs of the mother and the family change. They teach partners, siblings and family members to mother the mother.

We provide hourly in-home care that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Arrangements may be available for outer-island care and/or travel with the family. This care may include the following:

• Breastfeeding/bottle feeding support
• Baby care and advice (multiples or singles)
• Education on infant and mother care
• Infant massage
• Sibling advice and care
• Day or overnight care
• Care for baby at mom’s request
• Advice on purchasing layette, nursery and baby items
• Light household organization
• Light meal preparation
• Simple errands
• Non-judgmental listening
• Advice on physical and emotional recovery
• Screen for postpartum mood disorders
• Referrals to professionals
• Recommend local resources
• Miscellaneous tasks as requested
